Discount hunting puts you exactly where scammers like to wait: excited about a deal and moving quickly. Fake coupons, phony giveaways and lookalike shops are some of the oldest tricks online, and they work because they look almost like the real thing.

A few simple habits make you very hard to fool. None require technical knowledge — just slowing down for a few seconds at the moments that matter.

Warning signs in the offer itself

Real promotions are usually modest: 10–30% off, a fixed amount off a minimum spend, or free shipping. A code for 80–90% off everything, or a free high-value gift card, is a major red flag — especially if it arrives through a forwarded message or social post.

Pressure is another tell. Countdown timers, “only 3 left,” or a demand to share the offer with friends before you can claim it are designed to stop you thinking it through.

Check where the link actually goes

Before you enter anything, look at the address bar. Lookalike stores use domains with extra words, swapped letters, or unusual endings. When in doubt, close the tab and type the store’s address yourself, or search for it directly.

What a real store will never ask for

A genuine coupon never requires your bank password, a one-time security code sent to your phone, payment for a “processing fee” to receive a free item, or a gift-card purchase. Coupon codes are typed into the store’s own checkout — not into a survey or a form on a different site.

Be skeptical of extreme discounts and free high-value gift cards.
Ignore pressure tactics and “share to unlock” demands.
Check the domain, or type the store’s address yourself.
Never share passwords or security codes to claim an offer.
Report suspicious offers to the store being impersonated.

Store policies change often and vary by country and retailer. Treat this guide as general shopping advice, and check the current terms on the store’s own site before you buy.
