The first layer is the price the store is already showing. Some promo codes exclude sale items, which is why a code that works on a full-price item can fail on a reduced one. When a sale and a code can’t combine, do the math on both — a 30% sale often beats a 20% code anyway.

This is the layer people think of as “the coupon.” At most stores it is one per order. Some retailers do allow a promo code alongside a separate free-shipping code, or a percentage code alongside a store-credit balance, so it is worth trying a second code if the checkout has room for it.

Gift cards bought below face value, store credit, and card-linked offers from your bank all apply after the promo code, at the payment step. Because they come from somewhere other than the store’s promo engine, they typically don’t conflict with a code.

Card rewards are a final, separate layer on top: points or cash back from your card issuer are earned on whatever you end up paying.

Cashback portals and receipt-scanning apps pay you after the order, based on what you spent. One caution: some cashback programs exclude orders that used a code not published by that program, so read the portal’s terms if the cashback is worth more to you than the code.

Price-drop protection is the last layer. If a store offers price adjustments, a lower price within the window can earn you the difference back.
